Bajaj Pulsar 220 – Engine

The 220 cc Engine is really a power house for the bike. The engine is a Four Stroke engine, but the engine characteristics really question that. Providing a maximum torque of 19.12 Nm at 6500 rpm, there is no road that is hard for this bike. The maximum power of 21.4 BHP is attained at 8500 rpm of the engine. This is a Digital Twin Spark ignition engine with temperature based ignition mapping. The engine is supplemented with the largest venturi carburetor. A highly sophisticated Electronic control unit monitors the fuel inflow to the engine. The auto choke feature in the engine is really a class of its own.

Acceleration

The Bajaj Pulsar is a strong horse with the capability to reach from 0 to 60 in just 5.8 Seconds. The figure is really a competitive one among the corresponding class of bikes. The top speed of 106 km per hour is not so hard to reach point with its highly responsive five speed gearbox. The ratios in the gearbox are optimized for both speed and power for the particular speed ranges. The wet plate clutch is responsive to just the touch of the clutch handle. The Digital Twin Spark enables the complete combustion of the fuel helping the bike reach the required speed with ease.

Mileage

The bike is a racer class rated and anyone who plans to own the vehicle need not be bother much on the mileage. With a tank capacity of 15 Liters, there is no limitation on the distance for the vehicle to go on. The bike has a mileage of 36 Km per liter on the traffic laden urban roads. The figure was pretty good on highways with the pulsar providing a mileage of 45 Km per liter.

The vehicle’s mileage is more dependent on the rider’s style of riding. More throttling and high clutch operated rides can cost more on the mileage. Being a racing model, one should not expect much on the mileage from the bike.

Colors

The Bajaj Pulsar is a catchy bike in any color. The tank, the side claddings and the headlight are the areas that carry color in the bike.  The bike is available in three common colors

Catchy Black – With the look of a monster, this is the most sought after color by the youngsters. Perhaps this should be the color that should occupy majority of Pulsar’s population.

Sparkling Red – Provides the look of an apple bubbling with energy. Red is always full of fire and energy as the Pulsar is.

Soft White – The sheep in wolf’s clothing. Looks mean in the color, but the inside of it carries the fire.

Brakes

The brakes provide the safety for the bike. Maybe the designers thought that this untamed beast would require a lot more to get it tamed. This is the reason why the Pulsar 220 is provided with disc brakes on both the wheels. The dual caliper of 260 mm in the front wheel is the biggest for this bike provided for the guys who love to play with this bike. The rear disc brake is provided with a single caliper 230 mm disc brake that just stops the vehicle quite instantly. Do be careful in handling Pulsar 220 on the brakes. You could be anywhere else other than the bike.

Suspension

The front telescopic bush type suspension provides a friction free cushioning effect to the rider. No roads are out of bounds for the Pulsar 220 which has the best suspension in its class. The five way adjustable Nitrox suspension at the rear is really an owner’s delight. Adjust the rear suspension to affect the suspension choice of yours. One is provided with five choices of varying the suspension damping from very soft to strong. The suspension provides extreme control of the vehicle particularly at the curves. The suspension system enables the vehicle to glide easily through even the most inaccessible roads.

Wheels and Tyres

The Pulsar 220 is provided with black alloy wheels beautifully matched to the ambience of the vehicle. The Spokes in the alloy wheels are equally spaced to distribute the loading evenly from the tyres. The Pulsar 220 uses tubeless tyres on both the front and the rear wheels. The Front wheel is provided with the 90/90 x 17 tyre and the rear wheel is provided with 120/80 x 17 tyre. The broader tyre at the rear provides ample gripping to the vehicle particularly during the negotiation of the curves. The tubeless tyres add safety to the vehicle even in the eventuality of a puncture to the tyre.

Comfort

Though the suspension takes care of the rough roads and provides comfort for the vehicle, it is the seat that provides the comfort for the rider. The Split seat design is common among the racing bike varieties. The pillion seat eventually provided mainly to satisfy keeping the Indian mentality in mind. The rider’s seat is broadened at the back providing full support and tapered towards the front enabling the rider to adjust his legs freely. The rear seat is slightly elevated to provide the pillion rider more area for his seating. Leg rests for the rear seat is provided at an optimum height enabling the pillion rider to enjoy the ride in Pulsar 220.

Conclusion

On the whole, the new Pulsar 220 is a new wine in an old bottle. Successive successfulness of the Pulsar range has induced Bajaj to come up with this option. There is no second thought on the Success of this model in the market. Compared to the competitor’s variants available in the market in the same range, Pulsar 220 stands on top of the list mainly on its features and pricing. Fine Tunings are bound to be a part in the future models of Pulsar 220 to be released. But, still the current Pulsar 220 will rule the roost till that.
